Based on the name, that seems to support SOCKS(5) proxy servers.

The (BSD) netcat (nc) `-X` means to use the HTTP(S) CONNECT protocol proxy.

I don't have convenient access to that document.  Though I should find a
copy as I hope it's as interesting as it could be.
