Not exactly "by cutting a wire" but with a console command, the Amdahl 470/V5 could be upgraded to the performance of a V6, and the 470/V7 could be upgraded to a V8 through the use of the 470 ACCELERATOR feature.

We had that feature on a V5 implemented as a console macro called "gofast" and a corresponding "goslow".

This feature was installed during a repair necessitated by an unscheduled outage and we were initially given free use of it.  It quickly sold itself on both V5's we had at the time.

Wikipedia mentions it here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Amdahl_Corporation

You can also findit in some documents on bitsavers.

Anyone else ever hear this? Can't find a cite on the web.

Just curiosity, no real point to this...! (But it is Friday.)
