I ran into this. IBM has a method, but you have to pay for a service call.

Subject Re: Resetting a z14 HMC - forgot the admin password 🙁

I have a couple of HMC's that were used for a Z14 mainframe. The mainframe
has been reset and powered off. We forgot about the HMC's and disconnected
it from the network.

Now we realise we need to reset them before passing them into a new user,
and don't know what the admin password is. The IBM engineer has told us, if
we just reset the HMC it will restore the old passwords back from internal
storage and we are back to square one.

Is there a process like factory resetting them so that they go back to
their initial settings?

Any ideas appreciated.

As far as I understand you want to sell/give the z14 to another user. And you want to
erase your password and reset "admin password" to some known value.
All you need is the password of ACSADMIN user or any other user which is a
clone of ACSADMIN.
No such password?
Well...
It is possible to install HMC from bare metal - that means restore HMC as it
would experienced HDD failure. IBM CE is able to do that, but I think it will
be paid service.
