"REXX variables are limited to 31-bit storage"
Is it really 31-bit or rather 24-bit?
I'm asking because many moons ago I tried to use some REXX variables
coming from RMM and due to large number of tape volumes (~25000) the
script did not work. I asked on IBM-MAIN and people here explained it is
because of 24-bit memory limitation.
I vaguely remember it could be OS/390 2.10

I have been using REXX for over 30 years and I pretty much agree with
everything Dave says here.
Having Python " automatically there " on a customer system will make it used
much more frequently by IBM, ISV and public domain software.
REXX has always had some big pluses :
1. It is not CLIST
2. The ADDRESS host environment feature
3. Some nice parser functions compared to what else was around in late 1980s.
It is an easy scripting language for ad-hoc solutions and product invocation
drivers, but it is so limited in features, performance and scalability compared
to Python. The fact that REXX variables are limited to 31-bit storage is a very
real constraint that is most likely not going to change.
Migration away from REXX will happen slowly, but it will happen and we should
embrace it.

Even before Python or Java emerged, opting for offloads to zIIPs was a better
choice.
I meant to say "Even before Python emerged on z/OS, opting for offloads to
zIIPs was a better choice utilizing the JVM.
