You know what? I've decided to take @Rob's advice and do individual FREEMAINs one at a time. The code is going to run in a variety of shared ISPF and Websphere environments. No matter what subpool I choose, there is just no way of knowing that another programmer hasn't chosen to use the same subpool. Worst case doing individual FREEMAINs I will mess up his or her usage statistics. But doing subpool FREEMAINs, worst case I make a real mess.
IMHO subpools would have been a lot more useful if there were a way to reserve one, or at least to check (yes, TOCTOU issues) for an unused one. At the very least the world could use a "Cheryl SMF list" of known subpool utilizations.
