Too late! *:-)*

Cept z/VM shops usually "point to" a new set of CP vols, not just the new CP module. Still, it's "the system", which is commonly taken as a set of DASD (but in the case of CP can be the lone module, yes).

I'm a VMer like Phil, so I'm more asking than "saying".
But I would think MVS people do the same: point to the new set of z/OS vols; call that "the system". _Does that not work?_ Spool space, yeah, but user vols and data vols and even most LPPs should be point-n-shoot. (Granted, cataloging is a thing, and that's beyond me.)

I preach this "just point to the system" with Linux too (really any Unix). And there are always residual nits to pick.

Upgrading z/VM versions has been pretty trivial for quite a while: point to a
new CP module, reIPL.

Upgrading z/OS is a lot harder. There's no way to just swap the OS itself,
which means you need to clone the LPAR and then connect the user data volumes,
with required catalog tinkering. And SPOOL needs to be backed up and restored
(or contents lost).

Is this really still true in 2024?
