All, Going to throw my two cents worth in here. I think enhancing FTP/SFTP/SSH is the best way forward as it is the only ubiquitous solution we have today. Good points is it works everywhere. Bad points it has for the most part is it for most part open source (RFC, etc.) and because of that has been written to support the lowest common demoninator - mainly Windows / Unix variants with the mainframe kinda left behind with all it's nuances. Other bad point is when FTP/SFTP fails - it is a royal pain to troubleshoot - the cryptic erros and / or debug messages both for IBM and our vendor Tectia are like reading hieroglyphics - basically need a network expert and / or wireshark / and/or vendor to figure out what the messages actually mean. IBM / Vendors (such as Tectia) need to make these error messages more readable and much easier to interpret without being a network / TCP tunneling expert.
When FTP / SFTP works - it works great which in our environment is 95% of time - just all the time to troubleshoot "issues" / bugs, etc are the painful part. Also, I think mainframe needs some user friendly FTP front end ISPF panels to use and make more user friendly (kinda like we already have in the 3270 emulators and FTP GUI's (Winscp & Filezilla)... Hope IBM / vendors are listening here.
