We have a Z16 connected to a TS7700. The TS7700 is also connected to
Physical Tape drive TS4500. Our tape management system is Broadcom CA1. If we
want to stop using the TS7700 and send our tape data to an S3 private cloud
solution, but still want to replicate the data to Physical tape as well, what
are the options ?
Can we connect the S3 to Physical tape drive or we have to connect the Z16
directly?
1. You *cannot* connect any contemporary physical tape directly to a
mainframe.
Directly - means physical tape is logical tape volume.
The last IBM physical tape directly attachable to a mainframe was TS1140.
2. VTS. You have TS77x0T box, note the T. It means tape on backend. TS4500.
Such box *cannot* be configured to work with cloud. However you can have
TS77x0C (note the C), which means cloud attach. Yes, S3 is supported.
3. Your options:
a) ask IBM about your VTS reconfiguration from T to C. It would be paid
or impossible.
b) buy "C" box and add it to the grid. Note, there is no requirement to
disconnect TS4500.
c) completely get rid of the VTS and...
i) there is IBM solution
ii) there are non-IBM solutions, including software only ones like
Model9 or VTFM-NewGen.
iii) note you will *NOT* get such performance. No Internet link would
offer throughput comparable to local multi-FICON-attached disk array.
BTW: why do you want to stop using TS7700? Mama said so?
