On July 1, 2024, IBM Open Enterprise Foundation for z/OS (5655-OEF) became a standard, included part of the base z/OS license last year at no additional charge — as a "bypassable requisite." That also means you can open OEF support cases with IBM just like you would with any other z/OS component, with the same support terms and response goals associated with your license. The Open Enterprise Foundation greatly expands the range of popular tools and utilities on z/OS. Examples include Git, Perl, Bash, and Curl. On February 7, 2025, IBM will release an OEF update that will further expand this toolset. Additions include GNU GPG (for encryption and digital signing, including code signing), Jq (for processing JSON formatted data), and GNU Which (to identify the path location of executable programs).
