In the simplest form you need to have TCP/IP access to a mail (SMTP) server.
I agree that sending email when everything works is fairly straight forward.
But the problem that comes up is what do you do when not everything works?
- mail server isn't available?
- what if the receiving mail server rejects the message (for any reason)?
- other similar errors
- queueing / retrying
These are just some of the things that you will need to take into
account when rolling your own SMTP client.
