I am constrained to use the software they have installed or have offered on 
their software portal. I can install IDz but not Open Editor.

No, but I'd suggest specifying string2 a a regex, R'string2'.

Better, allow the user of ISPF on z/OO to choose a different
editor, as is somewhat supported on ISPF for CMS, one which
supports PCRE captures, not only to string2 but also to
ISPF variables, as is a feature of the C RTL.
