Wasn't IBM the first to have retractable R/W heads on a tape drive?

Chaining of I/O requests.

I know that Burroughs had fixed-head disks before IBM, but did they have an 
equivalent of RPS?

Didn't IBM invent some of the print technologies on its tab machines?

Golfball; I recall IBM selling a metric buttload of 2741 terminals.
