IMHO that's more complex topic.
AFAIK that requires some add-on software like CA MIM family member or IBM ATAM. However IMHO virtual library is the cure, with no AS devices or add-on software. Reason: plenty of virtual devices. Just plan it, and statically assign the devices to the systems. In the old days I had to do it for physical drives, muuuuuuch less drives. Then some ATAM would help me, but I had no budget for that.

I think IODF setting is simply default state of the devices.
You can use V ccuu,AUTOSWITCH,ON /OFF with no changes to IODF.
Caution: this command changes (varies) all devices in the CU.

Works fine. I do not know if the IODF setup is a required pre-requisite or not.

Does anyone have any experience with the following command versus doing it in
the HCD?

         VARY (xxxx,xxxx),AUTOSWITCH,ON
