Some questions to consider

1) How much data is currently on tape?
2) Do you encrypt your tape that goes off site?
3) How often do you add new tape to your current environment?
4) How much tape do you create on a daily basis?
5) What are your growth trends in tape? Forecast what your requirements
are over time
6) What response time do you need on your tape recalls or recoveries?
7) During DR do you have the same equipment available?
8) Is this your DR site or do you rent time at a DR site?
9) What size tapes do you need for your environment?
10) What size tape do you current use? (10GB, 30GB, 60GB, 100GB, etc)

If the answer to 8 is your DR site, have you considered tapeless solution?
Two VTL/VTS libraries that replicate to each other?

Subject: Choosing a tape library

Hi,

I was asked to help choose a tape library for our system.
We currently have 4 3590’s connected to an 3590-a60 using ESCON.
We have a z114-I04 running z/OS 1.13.

We use tapes for backing up full volumes disks using DFSMSdss, and for
ADABAS backups. These tapes are shipped to the DR site.
Tapes are managed using CA-1.

Thanks

Gadi
