In my shop we did the following :

a) Physical backup or volume dump once a week
b) Selective or logical backup daily except on the day the disk dump/volume
backup is taken
c) The disk dump/physical backup was kept for 8 weeks, the logical backup was
kept for 5 weeks
d) To recover the LPAR (e.g. disaster recovery) we restored all volumes from
the physical volume dump/backup.

I never encountered any problems (dsn recovery or LPAR/Disaster recovery using
the above procedure.

Hope this is helpful

 Hello

Just trying to understand some of your experience about physical tape
backup up.

I know almost most of the shops are tapeless.
But when you had physical tape ,

1 ) What are the files you backed up to 3590 ?
2 ) what was the retention period you followed for database  , system
volumes and user datasets ?
3 ) Generally to recover an entire lpar from a physical tape a volume level
backup for an entire lpar would suffice ?

Any information on the above would help me to research further.

Regards
Peter
