Mark,
Programs written for CICS/VS in the supported language had to go thru
the translator/precompiler- The code generated was then fed into the
assembler/compiler.
At that time the code generated by the translator could either be
compiled in MVS or DOS. Rarely done- but possible.
So Mike is correct - a compile is enough - for MACRO-level assembler.
But I am 100% sure that he ment translate and compile for everything else.
This is today no longer true - the code generated for CICS/TS on VSE has
different bit meanings in the DFHEIENT than in MVS. This started slowly
with the advent of TS.
The generated code was never really transportable (maybe with assembler
and no subroutines).
