The "xmitmsgx" message formatter is a CMS 'XMITMSG' work-alike for Linux, Unix, and Unix-like systems, including USS.
The latest release is out now, 2.2.4, available on GitHub.

I have used it in a couple other projects, XFL (POSIX Pipelines) and UFT (Internet SENDFILE). Works. The messages file is source compatible with CMS 'GENMSG', but this utility does not require a "gen"; it just reads the message source file.
It also tries to follow locale settings for finding the right language.

I first got hooked on CMS 'XMITMSG' back in the Gopher and Webshare days. Had never actually used it before then, but community pressure to employ it in CMS Gopher was overwhelming. As I got to know the tool, I fell in love with it. Was shocked to *not* find an equivalent on MVS (though now am told there is one or two). Always then wanted it in the Unix world, and now have it. Ahhhhh...
