The assembler code isn't all that complicated. On CBT file 860 are two programs, SAVETAPE and SMFMERGE, written in the late sixties by Richard Oxley, who did a passable job (in retrospect there are some things that could have been done better, but back then we were all learning our way around the 360s).

When Dr. Merrill offered his SMF package, we were running SAS, and the customer support group used it heavily. But I wasn't aware of the V(B)S cleanup feature.
