If RECFM were merged at OPEN, the application could easily
be multi pathed to issue A, M, or none accordingly.  Doesn't
HLAAM do part of that for SYSPRINT?

I once wrote a dump routine sensitive to JCL LRECL, to
format for either terminal or printer.  It was little used.
