I still have an IBM 1403 carriage control tape punch. Makes a good paperweight for all the AFP pubs. I use the carriage tapes as props when teaching Intro to AFP.
I used to rent time on a 360-40. The 2821 controller was worth more than the rest of the system because it was still used to drive unit record gear, so we had a 1401 to drive the 1403 (manual cover, not the -N1 model with the auto-raise cover) by writing output to tape on the 360 and hanging the tape on the 1401.
