If you have the FICON cards available, do it now regardless. For any of the other solutions, it would be silly (if even supported) to put them on ESCON.
This is a no-brainer. You will be very impressed by this alone. I just reviewed a decade-old presentation that had FICON over 5 times faster than ESCON *at that time*. What would happen if we convert to FICON? I tried looking at the datasheets, but there are many speed ratings. We are running z/OS 1.13 on z114, and the backup is done using native DFSMSdss.
