According to IBM, the VVDS datasets are no longer being cataloged (if I’m reading it right: https://www-304.ibm.com/support/docview.wss?uid=isg3S1000075).
Yet, the VVDS on most of our Respack volumes are being cataloged. 1. Does anyone have any idea why and how they get cataloged? Is it part of the build? We initialize the Respacks outside the install panels, uncataloged. 2. Since users can catalog them, does anyone know any value in having VVDS datasets cataloged? Here’s the text of the link: Question Managing catalogs states that all SYS1 data sets must be cataloged in the MASTER catalog. Answer Description: Managing catalogs states that all SYS1 data sets must be cataloged in the MASTER catalog. Resolution: As of DFSMS 1.1.0 (OS/390 1.1) SYS1.VVDS entries are no longer required to be in the MASTER catalog. SYS1.VVDS entries will still at times be seen in the MASTER catalog for volumes on which some UCATS reside. This is caused by the catalogs being created under previous levels of DFP. Also if a data set resides on the same volume as a UCAT and the data set is, or once was, cataloged in the MASTER catalog, then a SYS1.VVDS entry will be in the MASTER catalog. Also, when a VVDS is created, it does not have to be cataloged in any catalog, although the user can catalog it if he wishes. David G.
