kids to 'clean up that old stuff' with 'something better', not realizing that
working code (that is documented and whose source code is available, and is
still maintainable) is an incredibly valuable asset that 'keeps on giving'....

Yes, kids, make something new. But there are many disadvantages to reworking
the old, just to update it (for no other reason).
