One key advantage of not going the "pretend it's VB" route - which you can now do in 2.1 - is you don't stand to break records. For example SMF 30 and SMF 42-6. These are not the kind of records I want to break. :-)

The trick is just to get a formatted dump with the IFASMFDP program which is in RECFM=VBS. Because in z/OS 1.13 VBS datasets are not readable directly with REXX you have change this dataset in a RECFM=VB Format i.e. with the IDCAMS REPRO command. This dataset now is readable with REXX and you can use it like any other dataset. As Martin Packer mentioned in a earlier posting, in z/OS 2.1 REXX is able to read VBS files directly.
