My choice of the phrase "behind the scenes" was perhaps less than felicitous. By it I meant to say that while many/most programmers understand that return codes may, very often will be, set by a CALL statement or a function reference, they are often not so clear about what happens when an EXEC <whatever> statement is executed.
A CICS AP may do neither, either, or both. An executed CICS [Command Level, to use some old terminology] service returning control to an AP uses the COMMAREA.
