Why? IIRC, the DataClas is assigned at allocation time. While you can
issue an IDCAMS ALTER command for the StorClass & MgmtClas, you can't
Alter the DataClas. This makes sense to me when you consider that most,
if not all, of the DataClas attributes have to be used when the dataset is
created.
Well, most, but not all. In the old days Data class (DC) was simply set
of dataset attributes like RECFM, LRECL, DSORG, even SPACE.
However Dynamic Volume Count (DVC) is notable exception. It alters
behavior of existing (old) datasets with the DC assigned.
For example you can change DVC value from 3 to 30 and all subsequent MOD
allocations (appends) will honour new volume count.
Note, the DVC or secondary space are "declarative" attributes - would be
used if append would occur. In the contrast, parameters like BLKSIZE,
RECFM, LRECL or DSORG are "physical" attributes - there are physically
existing records withe above parameters in the dataset. Those parameters
cannot be changed without dataset reallocation.
