You already got proper answers, I try to summarize it using my poor English:
You don't need to read datasets from tape in sequence
You cannot read non-existing dataset. For example 8th dataset from tape
containing 5 datasets.
You can write N+1 dataset and repeat it as many times as you want.
Everytime you just write one, N+1 dataset.
You cannot write N+2 or N+3 (or so) dataset.
You can or cannot (!) overwrite existing dataset.
When you overwrite last dataset, nothing special happens, it's typically
allowed by your Tape Management System aka TMS (RMM, CA-1, Control-T).
When you overwrite non-last dataset (you were allowed to do it), then
all next datasets are lost.
