Most people wait until the subject has died before publishing an obituary.
About twenty five years ago IBM was dying. Low and behold there was a
turnaround and the patient survived. Cringley could have written how IBM is
prosperous and thriving, but no one will pay to read that. Instead he wrote of
IBM's imminent demise which appealed to all sorts of naysayers. If Cringley is
right, IBM will go out of business and Cringley will be known as a wealthy
savant. If he's wrong he will just be wealthy. IBM is not perfect and is in a
tough business. It has faced difficult times before and come through them. I
predict that in twenty years another pundit will publish yet another prediction
of IBM's imminent demise. (You can substitute Apple. GM, DuPont, Union Pacific,
etc. for IBM if you'd rather).
