When I need to capture the "current" z/OS SYSLOG to a data set, I do it by going into SDSF DA. I then SORT ASID to get *MASTER* to the top. I then put a ? in front of it to show the SYSLOG entry, which I can then use like an XD command to copy to disk. But I've noticed something "weird". I have two members in my Sysplex (basic). For one *MASTER*, I see a DD name of SYSLOG02 and a STEP name of RESOLVER. For the other *MASTER*, I see a DD name of SYSLOG02, but a STEP name of BPXOINIT.
I think that I understand the SYSLOG02. SYSLOGnn, where "nn" ranges from 01 up and basically increments each time a SYSLOG output is spun off (or a W command is issued). But where does the STEP name come from? Each of my systems seems to be consistent. I.e. SY1 always shows RESOLVER, even after an IPL. And SY2 always shows BPXOINIT, even after an IPL. At least as best as my memory goes. I'm just really curious about this oddity. Does anybody out there have something different? What?
