Barry, your list of debugging products is incomplete without adding the most
modern debugger for z/OS which is our Trap Diagnostic Facility (TDF)
product. It fully supports and exploits 64-bit environments and even
provides non-interactive debugging.

Since you were kind enough to give me that tape drive a few years back, I'd
love to return a favor and help you out anyway I can. Check our web page
for more information on TDF.

Subject: TSO Test does not support 65-bit debugging?

To my surprise even in 2014 the TSO TEST command does not support 64-bit
debugging!

For example, there is no way to display the contents of a 64 bit register.
TSO TEST only shows the rightmost 32 bits.

Tactically, in the short term there are ways around this by storing the 64
bit registers into memory for viewing or forcing dumps.

But strategically as we move on further into the 21st Century this may
become this may become a significant problem for supporting assembler
modules in MXG as more use of 64-bit environment is required.

Some modern alternatives to TSO TEST (all at extra cost) are:

. HLASM Tookit from IBM
. Xpediter/TSO from Compuware
. z/XDC from Colesoft Software

Did IBM really drop the ball on this by stabilizing the TSO commands at what
is becoming an increasingly ancient level (non-64-bit)? Or have we missed
something?

Merrilly yours,
Barry Merrill
