and there is, of course, a sense in which he is quite right.
Regrettably, it is not a very important sense.  Correctly formulated
"formal" searches are not the norm.  They are, I suspect, rare; and
this is understandable if deplorable.  Those who know how to formulate
a non-simple query in some context mostly don't need to make it.

Let me add that I should not wish to open the floodgates.  Inadequate,
too generic subject lines and topic drift that makes them irrelevant
are inescapable.  Unfortunate obvious typos are a different matter,
and it is they that I think should be corrected early.
