Possible. Other tape management software does that more or less the same. 
Either your request is failed immediately or you get something written you did 
not intend at all.  [1]

Check your global settings for handling such request. Depending on usage of 
certain FACILITY class profiles in RACF, you can override default actions.

Good suggestion as long it is on a test tape/cartridge (and keeping your DBAs 
happy). This is what we did to test out different usage when we got a new tape 
management system and/or robot.

[1] - I rewrote an exit in assembler which is the interface between our tape 
management software and our robot to correctly return volsers as scratch. The 
supplied source was wrong and caused problems.
