My tks to Peter. I hadn't thought of the AFP aspect since it was not involved
in my particular problem. [1]

In the meantime, tho', an examination of the postScript payload to be wrapped &
delivered showed that the program was requesting Letterhead but the destination
machine had none configured ie. all Plain paper. Hence, the printer rejected
the file [2] with its cryptic message. I've passed it along to the printer
support folx to manage the configuration.

A delayed thanks to y'all.

[1] We do AFP using PSF so I'm not unfamiliar; just not experienced.
[2] I manually massaged the source postScript to request Plain and, Violet!, I
got printed results.

There is a list called AFP-L where a lot of printing people are subscribed,
incl. Ricoh (former Infoprint) specialists. You may try there.
