My go-to DASD 'health check' is the DEVSERV command. It will actually
touch a volume, not just check OS control blocks: DS P,xxxx . The volume
below happens to have allocated data sets, but otherwise the A would be O.
Most important is the healthy status of all channel paths: lots of +s,
which mean that they are physically working.

IEE459I 07.13.39 DEVSERV PATHS FRAME LAST F E SYS=A0

The lack of an "A" does not automatically mean that anything is bad.

If you browse or edit any dataset on dasd, and display the dasd, you
should see the A, meaning that the volume is allocated.

Until people log on and/or batch work starts, O (online) is pretty
common.
