Yes, this is how it works. Your output is usable up to the very last full 
logical record. Remaining records are thrashed.

Redo your backup job after cleaning your tape drive heads.

Every time on same place on same tape volser? If so, your tape is bad. If not 
you're having some hardware problem.

Are you constantly having the problem or are you getting it now and then on the 
same volser?

Are you using PPRC? If so, there could be a channel problem between your local 
and remote site. Vary it offline and use another one. And redo your job from 
the start. Ask me how I know (and love???) it... :-(

Look at your EREP records and talk with your IBM rep or your tape + tape drive 
vendor(s).
