"VSAM" covers a variety of things. There's KSDS, ESDS, Linear, ...
Linear is perhaps the simplest. And I understand that zFS is a special
case of Linear. But the zFS format is highly confidential; understanding
it requires either money and an NDA or reverse engineering and likely
violation of an EULA.

A couple experiments. With FTP:

ftp> get GLOBAL.CSI
local: GLOBAL.CSI remote: GLOBAL.CSI
229 Entering Extended Passive Mode (|||34263|)
550 VSAM data set ...GLOBAL.CSI cannot be processed.
ftp> exit

With NFS:

user@HOST: wc GLOBAL.CSI
    3316 6929 83475 GLOBAL.CSI
user@HOST: wc GLOBAL.CSI.INDEX
       3 29 2554 GLOBAL.CSI.INDEX
user@HOST: wc GLOBAL.CSI.DATA
       0 0 0 GLOBAL.CSI.DATA

... I have no idea what it all means.
