For many years, Judy and I ran ham radio "phone patches" for the folks at the South Pole, so they could talk to their folks at home. Almost all of those calls were to the Minneapolis area, because that's where the employers of these technicians interviewed; if you can survive a winter in Minneapolis, they said, you'll do well at the pole.
