I asked my storage guy, just out of curiosity.

Apparently they dropped ABARS because usage of VTS is somewhat difficult. They 
require tapes/cartridges during ABARS usage to be ejected and transported 
elsewhere. They now use other backup methods depending on different backup 
needs, frequency and periods for keeping them.

As Tom Marchant said, it is useful against DASD failure, but you have also 
DFDSS dump to consider.

But for applications, we use different methods of backup / recovery tools. But 
it depends, just like Neil Duffee stated in his post.

So, to Lizette, the answer is - 'it depends'.
