For my installation this is the biggest factor that I still order real medium *after* I order internet delivery. I don’t need tape do that however, DVD would suffice, as it will just sit in a box. I did relay this privately to John as well. My last serverpac had upwards of 100 ISO images CDrom or DVD. You are forced to download them, because by the time you *might* need it, the order will have expired. _________________________________________________________________ Dave Jousma Assistant Vice President, Mainframe Engineering [email protected] 1830 East Paris, Grand Rapids, MI 49546 MD RSCB2H p 616.653.8429 f 616.653.2717 -----Original Message----- From: IBM Mainframe Discussion List [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of R.S. Sent: Monday, May 11, 2015 11:43 AM To: [email protected] Subject: Re: z/OS Platform Software Products on ... Tape? Regarding software products, can I live without tape? Yes, definitely. Would I like it? No. I use tape as an installation medium only for ServerPacs (z/OS and DB2, and CICS, and NCP in the past). Other stuff like IBM CBPDO or ISV products come to me via Internet or via DVD (for ISV's which do not offer Internet download). Now, why I use tapes for ServerPac. A couple of reasons: * Software download is cumbersome, especially for big downloads. I want to have packing list, MEMOEXT, basic documentation (Installation Directiories) and some "ISO data". It is much easier to get in in the box. Note, the same advantage exists for non-tape physical medium (DVD). Note, the bigger problem exists for non-z/OS code add-ons like documentation or ISO images (CD, DVD). * SMP/E and "pre-SMP/E" procedures for software installation. You have to upload (or download directly) the package to the host - that mean huge HFS container. Then you have to unpack it (can be combined with next step), RECEIVE it, then start SMP/E installation. A lot of DASD space is consumed. Compare it to ServerPac procedure: two jobs. ALLOCDS creates empty datasets, next job reads the tape(s) and copies fills the libraries. No DASD needed for "tape content". * Procedures. Both CBPDO and ServerPac assume tape as medium. * Lack of scripts. When I get DVD or Internet-downloaded files I have to upload it to the host manually. It would be nice to insert first DVD into the drive run some application - some ftp frontend, choose some simple options like HFS directory, IP (kept for next uses) and start copying+restoring. my €0.02 HTH -- Radoslaw Skorupka Lodz, Poland W dniu 2015-05-11 o 16:36, John Eells pisze: > We see a low and decreasing percentage of our software orders on tape. > > If you are still using tape for z/OS platform software delivery (that > is, any product that runs on z/OS, not just z/OS itself), I'd like to > hear from you to understand: > > - Why you choose tape for software delivery > - Whether you can use one of the alternatives, DVD or Internet, and if > not, why. > > Feel free to either post or send me a note directly.
