It took me really some time to chew up your post ;-) - but I have 2 questions if you don't mind please. Are these datasets SMS managed? If so what are their management classes regarding the retention limit/#backupversions/ auto or command backup/dump allowed/not allowed. Just curious if those management classes may have any effect on your backup/recovery attempt.
