Because I want (well, customers demand) maximum performance on the machines 
they typically have, but one or two pesky customers want to run on an older 
machine.

Why not compile with a level that will work on all machines on which you will 
run? If you compile with ZS-2 you can run back to a z990. The bad news is that 
your code will be optimized for a z990.
