OK, it is a long shot here, but hey, I get to help with restoring a
1401 system...

Is there any obscure lore about this machine with the no smoking tags
(zoom in on the picture of the 729s)? We can use any leads you guys
might dig up.

We're looking to find someone who might recognize the source or
previous users of IBM 1401 system that arrived at TechWorls! 23 Nov
2015.

Here's the starting point data from donor Paul Pierce. Images of the
machine, including the multi-lingual No Smoking signs on the tape
drives noted below, are found at

Susan,

I purchased it DOD surplus and picked it up in Phoenix, AZ. From the
dual-connect tape drives and the other materials that came with it I
surmise that it was used as a high-speed peripheral set for an IBM
7080 system, perhaps at the Defense Logistics base where I picked it
up since the 7080 was designed for accounting and would have been at
home in a logistics center. If you reach out to retired IBM CE's and
DOD personnel in the Phoenix area you might find someone who remembers
it for the "No Smoking" labels on the tape drives.

Paul

Thanks for your sleuthing assistance,

Susan
