Oh Ned. The 'Energy Dept' Showed up mid sixties to reclaim some motor
generators on loan to the Physics Dept. in WWII. They were long since out of
use and stored in the attic. After much work by some hefty guys, they were
finally loaded on the Flatbed. The supervisor said on the way out, the reason
we wanted them back was we ran out of copper for the windings and had to
use silver! 1200 lbs 99.9% pure each.

A millisecond would be 1M feet or 186 miles. Even very thin
transformer wire would be pretty heavy.
