I learned at SHARE in San Antonio that a new level of HMC code would free us from the whimsical vagaries of the Java beast. Java has been a thorn in the side as long as remote HMC has depended on it for displaying Op Sys Messages (and others). The chronic problem is that each new Java release breaks the HMC interface. Since I got a new laptop a few months ago, I have not been able to use any Java-based function despite replacing the pre-installed Java with an older release that appeared to be the same as that of a colleague who was working OK. The Java Conundrum has been discussed here in the past.
Yesterday we got HMC 2.13.1 installed (replacing 2.13.0). Op Sys Messages now display on my workstation with no dependence on Java. On Chrome, no less, which seems to have abandoned Java altogether. Take that, beast! . . .
