That book is quite old, and only talks about Red Hat Enterprise Linux. There are newer versions which use newer versions of z/VM, RHEL, and SUSE Linux Enterprise Server. More to the point, the Cookbooks are really only appropriate system setups if you're planning on using the cloning methodology described in them, which is not what all people want. I would say the OP needs to understand how they will be deploying the gold images before deciding how to create them and what they will look like. Something like that would be better discussed on the Linux-390 mailing list hosted by Marist College.
