You just download Java for free from Oracle and install it.

Does it run on z/OS?  On Linux, it's massive and perhaps too modular:

JEdit is aimed at Windows and Linux and Mac. Runs great on all 3, as well as 
OpenBSD.


Running JEdit on z/OS strikes me as being a quick route to PTSD :)
