Probably a silly idea, but is it possible that your system's /var/cron is
a mount point and a different zFS data sets is mounted upon it? Easiest way
that I know of to check this is from a UNIX shell and issue the command:

df -v /var
df -v /var/cron

As an example (my /var/log is on a different zFS than /var)

$
df -v /var
Mounted on Filesystem Avail/Total Files Status

/LIH1/var (OMVS.I17RS1.LIH1.VAR) 28576/40320 4294967137 Available
ZFS, Read/Write, Device:7, ACLS=Y
File System Owner : LIH1 Automove=U Client=N
Filetag : T=off codeset=0
Aggregate Name : OMVS.I17RS1.LIH1.VAR
$

df -v /var/log
Mounted on Filesystem Avail/Total Files Status

/LIH1/var/log (OMVS.I17RS1.LIH1.VARL) 22866/149760 4294967242 Available
ZFS, Read/Write, Device:8, ACLS=Y
File System Owner : LIH1 Automove=U Client=N
Filetag : T=off codeset=0
Aggregate Name : OMVS.I17RS1.LIH1.VARL
