We run SuSe 11 and, soon, 12 under zVM 6.3 on a z114 w/ 2 IFL (30 or so instances of Informix) and on a zEC12 w/ 40 IFL (100+ SAP appservers) - and we are quite pleased with the whole set-up. We also license the Velocity toolset, which I highly recommend.
We started with Suse 10.2 under zVM 5.4 on a z9 with 2 IFL several years ago running a mixed workload with a DB2 LUW v9.1 server, websphere v6(?), and several other penguin servers. The only complaints that I, personally, have had are : 1) I can't EVER get management to buy enough memory ( mainframe or otherwise ) to run a virtual environment to its full potential, and ; 2) proprietary apps that are compiled for x86 and the creators are unwilling to recompile for z.
