The scripting for x3270 is basically just automation control. I don't
really understand why there would be a performance issue or concern.

http://x3270.bgp.nu/Unix/x3270-script.html

Here's an example that I did that logs into TSO with a password/passticket
supplied in an environment variable:

#!/bin/bash
# script to start x3270 and login to TSO with a MSG10 menu screen
zosuser=$1
zoshostandport=$2
connecthostandport=$3
connecthostandport=${connecthostandport:-$zoshostandport}

x3270 -script -xrm 'x3270.connectFileName: none' -once $connecthostandport
<<EOF
Wait(30,InputField)
Title($zosuser@$zoshostandport)
String(tso)
Enter
Wait(30,InputField)
String($zosuser)
Enter
Wait(30,InputField)
String($X3270PW)
Closescript(0)
EOF
