I can overtype the *USERID field.
Even if I hit enter....

The write protected bit occurs if you enter the wrong password.
If you really want a workaround, hit PA1, this gives the old LOGON prompt,
hit enter,
It will then prompt for USERID.

Now you can enter a Userid of your choice>
